This study was undertaken to analyze the displacement and stress distribution in the
mandibular first permanent molar restorative materials and the tooth itself by the Finite
Element Method. The design of cavity preparation for permanent teeth including depth,
width affects the falling out, breakage of material, break known of the tooth and
sensation of pain caused by the pulp. For the two dimensional Finite element model for
the permanent teeth, the buccolingual section of the crown of the mandibular first
permanent molar was used as standard.
The cavity preparation was Class I on the occlusal surface, width 1.0mm and 2.0mm,
depth 2.0mm, 2.5mm. 3.0mm. Restorative materials used were composite resin, silver
amalgam and gold inlay.
The load was applied parallel to the long axis of the tooth at central pit. Displacement
and stress figures were made after appling the load. Analysis was done for displacement
of each node and the equivalent stress on each element.
The results were as follows :
1 The direction of the displacement in the shape of the crown was from the buccal
cusp tips to the linguo-cervical area.
2. The degree of displacement was high at the buccal cusp tip, and the cervical area
was high on the lingual side.
3. The deeper and wider the cavity preparation, the lower the tooth around the
restoration was low. The degree of change in the position of restorative materials was
the lowest with the inlay.
4. The stress of the restorative material was concentrated in the restorative body,
however, the stress of the tooth was low.
5. The stress beneath the resin and the amalgam was high, however, the stress
beneath the inlay was low.
